Web Summit is a huge event: more than 70 000 visitors, around 10 million euros of yearly costs for Portugal, "the best technology conference on the planet". And this is how I thought before visiting the event. As Barry Schwartz told, "The secret of happiness is low expectations". So true.
My impressions:
- The place is nice. It easy to get there with the help of public transportation, which I recommend, because the traffic in Lissabon is quite intensive. The metro maps are marked with Web Summit logo.
- It is really huge. A great opportunity to meat and talk to smart people.
- It is NOT about Web and related technologies. Not only.
- If you want to hear meaningful, interesting, technical presentations, you need luck.
I have visited several ones at the central stage. It was like a water cooler chat: no visualization,
no figures, nothing about technology or not revealed enough.
- If you would like to buy a start-up or learn what not to do, here is the right place.
I was personally happy to see some startups from Russia and Ukraine.
- The "red line" for the startups is AI. I am not just sure if it is an abbreviation for Artificial Intelligence or Artificial Impression. It is everywhere.
- If you search for a job, here is the right place.
At first, I thought that it is really expensive for a candidate to apply that way, because of
entrance fee. On the other hand, for the recruiters it is a perfect filter.
- If you need support for your start-up from the large established companies, you could find it here. It's great.
- You need cache. While the Web Summit is about new technologies, the organization of the event is not.
- It's better to eat outside. Too many people.
- IBM with its quantum computer has impressed.
In the next article I will try to review some startups, which I have taken the notice of.
